Lumia Denim starts to roll out today to selected Lumia models in China
A number of Nokia Lumia models in China are receiving the Lumia Denim update starting today. The Nokia Lumia 520, Nokia Lumia 525, Nokia Lumia 526, Nokia Lumia 625, Nokia Lumia 720, Nokia Lumia 720T and the Nokia Lumia 1320 are the recipients of the update. Among the new features is one that allows you to activate virtual personal assistant Cortana by saying, "Hey Cortana." This feature requires a phone powered by a Snapdragon 8xx CPU.

Other changes include the latest update to the Lumia Camera app, which helps the camera boot up faster than before. It also allows you to snap a series of pictures with just a fraction of a second between shots. And on some models, Moment Capture will allow you to record video in 4K and capture HD photos from the video. The update also allows you to add either Bing Weather or Bing Health and Fitness data to the Glance screen.

Since the update is being sent out on a staggered basis, don't feel bad if it doesn't hit your phone today. It might take a few days before everyone receives it. And you can also try to manually pull Lumia Denim out of your phone by going to Settings > Phone update > Check for updates.

Blu Studio 7.0 launched as "the world's first 7-inch smartphone", costs just $149m

Blu Studio 7.0 launched as "the world's first 7-inch smartphone", costs just $149

Usually, devices with screens of 6-7 inches that can make phone calls are presented as phablets, or tablets with phone functionality. Well, that’s not the case with the Blu Studio 7.0, which today was announced as a “the world’s first 7-inch smartphone.”

The Blue Studio 7.0 is available to buy from Amazon for $149, being compatible with “any GSM network” in the US - including AT&T and T-Mobile.

Since you can’t expect a $149 device to offer advanced features, you shouldn’t be surprised to find out that the Blu Studio 7.0’s 7-inch display has a 600 x1024 pixel resolution, and a very low 169 ppi density. The huge smartphone runs Android 4.4 KitKat, and is powered by a dual-core 1.3 GHz MediaTek processor that’s paired with 1 GB of RAM. On the back (which has a perforated texture a la Samsung) we can find a 5 MP autofocus camera with LED flash, while a 2 MP camera resides on the front. 8 GB of expandable storage space and a 3000 mAh battery complete the specs list.

Measuring 187.5 x 103 x 9.4 mm and weighing 294 grams, the Blue Studio 7.0 has four color versions: grey, white, blue, and gold.

In case you don’t know, Blu is a US-based company that claims to design its products in Miami, while assembling them in China. Most of Blu’s devices run Android, though the company recently introduced a couple of Windows Phone 8.1 handsets as well.

Back to the Studio 7.0, would you use a device like this as your main smartphone?

Apple tells developers that existing app updates will need to be 64-bit by June 1st

Apple tells developers that existing app updates will need to be 64-bit by June 1st
Today, Apple posted a notice to developers to remind them that starting on February 1st, new apps submitted to the App Store must include 64-bit support and be built using the iOS 8 SDK. Starting on June 1st, the same requirements are necessary for updates submitted for existing apps. Apple has told developers that by using the default X code build setting "Standard architectures," they can build a single binary with both 32-bit and 64-bit code.

Forcing developers to include 64-bit support should remove some of the pressure from iOS, since apps now have to load 32-bit runtimes to be backward-compatible. The new rules though, won't affect any iPhone model older than the Apple iPhone 5s. It was the latter that first brought 64-bit processing to a smartphone.

Apple gave developers a heads up about the change in October, offering a 6-month warning on the 64-bit requirements for new apps. Today's warning gives developers working on updates to their apps, a similar warning.

BlackBerry will reveal 12 month road map at MWC

BlackBerry will reveal 12 month road map at MWC

BlackBerry CEO John Chen was in New York this morning to help launch the BlackBerry Classic. After releasing the BlackBerry Passport and the BlackBerry Classic this year, most BlackBerry fans want to know what's next for the manufacturer as it continues its turnaround. The CEO says that he plans on revealing a 12-month road map for the company during MWC 2014 in March.

There has been speculation about a new BlackBerry model that would feature a physical QWERTY keyboard that hides when not in use. The QWERTY would consist of three rows of keys on the bottom of the phone. Two of the rows would be covered up when not in use, by using a mechanism on the bottom of the device. This might be just one of a number of new handsets under development by the company.

Back in September, BlackBerry's Ron Louks, head of the company's devices group, said that the Passport would be followed by more devices that would push the envelope. At the same time, Chen said that BlackBerry would have some new devices to show off in Barcelona this March. When was the last time that you could honestly say that you were looking forward to seeing what BlackBerry has up its sleeve?

Android 5.1 could be introduced in February To Introduce

Android 5.1 could be introduced in February

Android 5.0.1 is currently the latest and greatest build of Google's open source mobile OS. But a report published on Wednesday suggests that Android 5.1 could be released as soon as February, and will include a number of improvements. Jumping a full decimal point to Android 5.1 instead of using 5.0.2 would seem unusual for an OS build that is not yet available to the vast majority of Android phones. In the past, such a jump has often ushered in a whole new OS name for Android. Exceptions were seen with Jelly Bean (Android 4.1, 4.2, 4.3) and Eclair (Android 2.0, 2,1).

According to the report, Android 5.1 will include the following changes: Silent mode added after missing on Android 5.0, General improvements in system stability, Improved RAM management, Fixes for sudden app closures, Improved battery management, Excessive consumption of network devices when used Wi-Fi fixed, Issues with wireless connections fixed, Problems with Okay Google function solved, Notifications problems solved, Some sound problems experience by certain devices fixed and Other improvements and changes.

Sounds like a rather ambitious update, perhaps worthy of the full decimal point jump. And yes, you should take this report with a grain of salt. But even though you're heading to your spice rack to open the Morton's salt, it doesn't mean that there isn't some truth to this report. If this update comes through in February, we don't expect Google to move on from the Lollipop moniker so quickly.
